In the twenty-third
issue of the Bed and Breakfast Traveller, we take you to Eastern Newfoundland,
a region famous for its rugged beauty, proud history, and warm hospitality,
making it a favorite destination for travellers... and film-makers!
Eastern Newfoundland
 The
eastern region of Newfoundland has developed quite a rapport with actors.
The New-Founde-Lande Trinity Pageant and accompanying Summer
in the Bight theatre festival have helped make the Bonavista Peninsula
a favourite destination over the past decade. Now, the Trinity Bight area
where they are held every year is famous as the location where both the
movie The Shipping News and the TV mini series Random Passage
were filmed. Both were released to good reviews in early 2002.
 The
Bonavista Peninsula is also where John Cabot landed in 1497, ushering
in a five-centuries old fishery that remains the economic mainstay of
rural Newfoundland. That history is explored at the Ryan Premises National
Historic Site in Bonavista.
The Burin Peninsula
comprises the other section of eastern Newfoundland, and is also synonymous
with the deep sea fishery on the Grand Banks, which are just offshore.
The Burin Heritage House at the Seamen's Museum in Grand Bank hold a wealth
of material on this seafaring culture. In this part of the province you
can explore tiny fishing villages that are centuries old. The town of
Fortune is the gateway to St. Pierre, a little bit of France just an hour
away by ferry.
CALENDAR OF EVENTS
 July-Sept.,
Trinity, Route 239, the New Founde Lande Trinity Pageant and Summer
in the Bight theatre festival. The pageant takes you on a musical
journey through the roads, lanes and historic sites of Trinity. You will
meet an array of colorful characters as our past unfolds in story and
song. A story of tears and laughter of soul and sadness, a moving tribute

 July-Aug.,
Trinity, Trinity Bay, Route 239, Dance Up is Newfoundland Set Dancing
every Tuesday at 8pm at Rocky's Place. Bring your dancing shoes and learn
the basic steps, and with the preliminaries out of the way, the live music
begins featuring Kelly Russell & Friends playing lively & authentic
Newfoundland music. Participants & spectators alike will have the
time of their lives, taking part in a time honoured local tradition. Tel:

July-Aug.,
Grand Bank, Route 220, Soirees & Times Dinner Theatre depicts the
history and culture of the area. A meal of traditional food, plus music
and songs. Tel: 709-832-1574. Also, look for other Soirees & Times
throughout the province.
Aug 9 - 12,
Burin, Route 221, Burin Heritage Weekend is a four-day community event
featuring live traditional music, food song & dance, a huge fireworks
show, sporting events and dancing, celebrating Burin's heritage and traditions.
