In
the 44th issue of the Bed and Breakfast Traveller, we take you
to St. Jacobs, and the Township of Woolwich, located in the Region of
Waterloo, only 3 kilometres north of Waterloo.

The
unique, rural villages of Old Order Mennonite Farm Country, feature
the best of picturesque countryside and fine examples of historic buildings,
including Ontario's last remaining covered bridge. St. Jacobs oozes
with over 100 charming shops, craft studios, antiques, restaurants &
inns, historical & cultural attractions. The Visitor Centre -
Telling the Mennonite Story, is located in the heart of the village
at 1406 King St. N. (519) 664-3518. It is a Mennonite interpretation
centre, designed to help visitors understand some unique aspects of
Mennonite history, lifestyle and beliefs, through a short video and
museum. Admission for the video & museum is by donation and at the
Visitor Centre an informative and reasonably priced map for a driving
tour of the surrounding Mennonite farm area is available.

Visit
and photograph Ontario's picturesque, but last covered bridge, spanning
the historic, Grand River (a Canadian Heritage Waterway). Take a horse-drawn,
trolley tour and see members of our Mennonite or Amish community as
they go about their daily routine in horse-drawn buggies and wagons
(these people are sensitive about photographs so please be discreet!).
Golf at one of the many local courses, canoe the Grand or wade it in
search of the feisty brown trout that lurk in the pools of this world
class fishery.

The
Quilt Gallery is adjacent to the Maple Syrup Museum. Excellence
in quilting is showcased in exciting exhibits that change every few
months and feature the work of individual artists, groups and guilds.
Walking
/ Biking Trails:
if
you stop at the Visitor Centre in town @ 1406 King St., St. Jacobs,
they have a small booklet that you may purchase for approx $4.00 called
A Guidebook To Woolwich Trails.
Behind
the Studios & Shops building in town, you'll find a foot bridge
that will lead you over the mill race to the Mill Race walkway. The
mill race was built at the turn of the century to generate electricty
for the mill located at the corner of King and Front Streets (it is
now shops). Along the 2.5 km walk to the dam you'll see the mill race
on your left and the Conestoga River on your right. It's a flat, smooth,
hard packed surface for walking or biking.
Another
hard packed flat surface trail, runs along the beautiful, Conestoga
River. If you continue under the Conestoga Parkway bridge which is approximately
2-3 km into the walk then it gets a little more rough and you will pass
through farmers' fields where you will have to open and remember to
close gates. This trail will continue to the bridge on the outskirts
of Conestogo and on. Both trails have parts that belong to the Canada
Trail.
