BBTraveller from www.bbcanada.com

Edition 6: July 4, 2001

In our sixth issue, the Bed and Breakfast Traveller takes you to Waterton, Alberta, a picturesque region that is home to the world's first International Peace Park. Rolling prairies, majestic mountain ranges, nature trails teeming with plant and animal life, and warm hospitality make Waterton a necessary stopover for nature lovers or those who just enjoy a relaxing vacation.

Remington Carriage Ride
In 1858, an explorer named Lt. Thomas Blakiston, upon beholding Waterton, called it, "grand and picturesque", with "mountains of curious shapes and magnificent cliffs." He named the lakes after the 18th century British naturalist Charles Waterton. The Waterton Lakes National Park, together with Glacier National Park in nearby Montana, united officially in 1932 to become the world's first International Peace Park.

The Waterton Area is a beautiful part of Southwestern Alberta. It is where the prairies meet the mountains. Some places to visit include Waterton Lakes National Park, Castle Mountain Ski Resort, Remington-Alberta Carriage Center in Cardston, one of Canada's best collections of horse-drawn carriages and sleighs, and the museums of Pincher Creek and Cardston. Area activities include skiing, hiking, golfing, and sight-seeing. Annual events include the Castle Mountain Ski Festival, Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Pincher Creek, and fairs and rodeos in Cardston and Pincher Creek.

Boat cruise
Enjoy a shoreline cruise on the Waterton Lake, and take the family for a swim at Red Rock Canyon, with its tall sheets of argilite rock reddened by iron oxidization. Children in particular will enjoy the bison paddock to the northwest of Waterton. Nature enthusiasts will want to hike along the region's multitude of trails and possibly catch a glimpse of a deer, bighorn sheep, wolf, eagle, and even a grizzly bear. In winter, the same surroundings offer cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and skating opportunities.
