"Horse and Buggy in Autumn-Does it get any better? -Photo courtesy of Carl Hiebert"

What is it about horse and buggy travel that seems so right in the autumn? As our Mennonite neighbours in St. Jacobs Country know - from the seat of a buggy the world just looks and feels different. You can appreciate details of your surroundings that you may not notice travelling by car.

Fun for all ages!

That’s why cycling and hiking the routes and trails around St. Jacobs County is so appealing when the colourful days of autumn arrive. Breath in the toasty aroma of sun dried corn fields and delight at the sight of eye popping fields of big orange pumpkins!

Shopping at St. Jacobs Farmers' Market

The contentment of cows munching grass along the fence lines will have you hungering for a bite of something yourself.

Mouth-watering bread from Stone Crock Bakery

Stone Crock Restaurant

How about a crisp, just-picked apple from a roadside stand or a gooey sweet butter tart fresh from the Stone Crock’s Village Bakery ovens? A number of new on-road cycling routes will have you wheeling around Woolwich Township on the ‘Mennonite Country Block Tour’, ‘The General Store Tour’, or ‘St. Jacobs Country Tour’.

Walkers may choose from a number of beautiful hiking trails that crisscross the countryside. Follow the Trans Canada Trail along the Mill Race, an 1860s mill pond beside the Conestoga River. Do some bird watching or fishing in the Grand River Watershed. The Village of St. Jacobs Self-Guided Historic Walking Tour is perfect for history buffs, and the village itself is a shopper’s paradise. Ride Waterloo Central Railway’s nostalgic scenic route from Waterloo to St. Jacobs with a stop at Canada’s largest agricultural Farmers’ Market where hundreds of vendors congregate weekly all year on Thursdays and Saturdays to sell their food and wares.
